Regal Glare

There's a moment with a Sea Eagle where you realise the looking is entirely one-sided — you think you're watching it, and then that eye lands on you and you understand you've had it backwards the whole time.

I painted this one after being properly unsettled by a Sea Eagle's stare — that cool, glazed, utterly unbothered gaze that misses nothing. Nada! Not the smallest bit of the room escapes them. This piece went on to become one of the most talked-about works in my Top End Characters exhibition — visitors kept coming back to it, half-convinced it was watching them back. I think it was.

A quieter palette than my usual bold colour, but that stare does all the work.
