An amazing memory, a singing voice that can mimic just about anything, and the sheer nerve to sit there and hold a pose while I painted him — this bird had it all.
Magpies are one of our most-loved birds for good reason. Unbelievably intelligent, brilliant mimics, and they remember faces and sounds with a clarity that puts most of us to shame. I painted this one from a photo taken on an interstate trip — he planted himself right in front of me and posed like he knew exactly what he was doing. Didn't even flinch.
