Mimicking Magpies
Magpies are an intriguing bird with a distinguishing call. Male and female are similar in appearance, but can be distinguished by differences in markings on their back.
The magpie can mimic over 35 species of native and introduced bird species, as well as other animal calls, such as those of dogs and horses. Magpies have also been noted to mimic human speech, when living in close proximity to humans.
Often hand fed by households around Australia, but some magpies can become aggressive, swooping and attacking anyone approaching their nest. Research has shown that magpies can recognise at least 100 different people, and may be less likely to swoop individuals they have befriended.
