Maggie
Magpies are birds with personality and are often hand fed by households throughout Australia. Male and female are similar in appearance, but can be distinguished by differences in markings on their back.
They make a distinctive chortle sound when calling to other magpies nearby and can mimic over 35 species of native and introduced bird species, as well as other animal calls, such as those of dogs and horses. Magpies have also been noted to mimic human speech, when living in close proximity to humans.
Some magpies can become aggressive, swooping on anyone approaching their nest. Interestingly, magpies can recognise at least 100 different people, and may be less likely to swoop individuals they have befriended.
